COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ Sri Lankan soldiers and separatist Tamil
rebels clashed in northern Sri Lanka on Saturday leaving three
guerrillas dead, military said.
The fighting broke out early Saturday across the de facto border
that separates government and rebels territories in Omanthai village,
northern Sri Lanka, a Defense Ministry official said on condition of
anonymity citing ministry policy.
Three guerrillas were killed and one soldier was wounded in the battle,
the ministry said.
Also Saturday, air force planes bombed two rebel bases in
Thoppigala, one of the last guerrilla strongholds in the east,
spokesman Group Capt. Ajantha Silva said.
Details of casualties were not immediately available.

A rebel spokesman was not reachable early Saturday for comment on either incident. - --comments-->21--410--1
